Punk Love

Charlie just finished up designing a new book of photographs. Punk Love. Written by Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye, Photographed by Susie J. Horgan

Book Description
Celebrating friendships that have been bound together by music since 1979, Susie J. Horgan's largely unpublished images were taken as friend and participant on the music scene, rather than as a journalist, and are both an exceptional contribution to the history of punk as well as a true reflection of punk values. She captured iconic photographs of such hardcore legends as Minor Threat, S.O.A., Teen Idles, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Cramps, Untouchables, Youth Brigade, the Germs, and many others. Punk Love documents specifically the birth of the early Washington, D.C., punk movement in 1979. D.C. punk was a different kind of punk. It was hardcore. It was explosive. It was revolutionary. But people misread punk rock as being about hate and anger. It was spiritual. It was about self-respect and justice-basic morals and values. This is punk love.

About the Author
Susie J. Horgan (also credited as "Susie Josephson" and "Susie J.") met Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye at her ice cream-scooping job at the Häagen-Dazs in Georgetown. She began photographing her D.C. friends who played in hardcore punk bands. Susie is now based in Miami. Henry Rollins is an actor, writer, poet, and the frontman for the Rollins Band. He is also the host of his own television show, The Henry Rollins Show on the IFC Network. One of Ian MacKaye's first bands, Minor Threat, was the seminal D.C. hardcore punk band. MacKaye co-founded Dischord Records and still performs with his current bands, Fugazi and The Evens.

Guitarded

OK, this is my friend Abe. That's me in the background. This is the day he and my friend Paola introduced me to Guitar Hero, a brain numbing version of Dance Dance Revolution for those of us who either can't dance or don't like the music. I'm a bad guitarist and I suck at this too but the music is better and you can "ROCK OUT" with a little plastic guitar with no strings.

French Lick

We wanted to put up Ira (The Man) Newman's film online so that everyone or just me could watch it. It is interesting. He did it about 150 years ago. It is funny seeing ira as a young hippie. I emailed Ira letting him know I wanted to post the movie and thought he could provide a little bit of insight into the movie.

Interview via email with Ira Newman about his movie French Lick

Doink: We are going to put a link to your movie French Lick on our blog so it can be viewed online. Do you want to write something about it? Or maybe say something about the movie?

Ira: Student work, B-, Visit French Lick.

Doink: Is that it? Do you want to add anymore insight or say more about it?

Ira: Take a hike.

Doink: Was it shot in the French Lick Springs resort?

Ira: Duh

I grabbed some info about French Lick from Wikipedia since Ira was being so helpful

French Lick was originally a French trading post. The town was founded in 1811. The sulfur springs were commercially exploited for medical benefits starting in 1840. By the later half of the 19th century, French Lick was famous in the United States as a spa town. In the early 20th century it also featured casinos attracting celebrities like boxer Joe Louis, composer Irving Berlin and gangster Al Capone. Pluto Water, a best selling laxative of the first half of the 20th century, was bottled here. Franklin Roosevelt won his nomination for his run for president inside the French Lick Springs Hotel. Tomato Juice was first invented and bottled in French Lick. Today, the town is perhaps most famous for being the hometown of NBA great Larry Bird.

Ira later called back and asked for us to wait on uploading the film. I was running into problems converting to movie to a smaller size. I kept loosing the audio. So, we decided to wait till the end of September to try an convert the file from an older version. The 2 people who read this blog (Me being one of them) will have to wait. I would like to apologize to myself and the other person. I hope there is another person.

Thanks to Charlie

As a proud alumnus of Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, I sometime like to give a little back to the school. So for the 2nd year, I designed an announcement informing the Alumni and students of the second annual Belen vs Columbus football game. For years our schools have had a rivalry being the two of the biggest all boy Catholic Schools in Miami-Dade County. Belen has always been considered the school who valued education above sport. So, our chances of winning were slim. But, it was still fun to go and root for the underdog fueled by the fact that we'd beaten Columbus in basketball in previous years. Ok, we lost but, it still doesn't sway my loyalty. Maybe next year we can work on passing the ball.

Mustang Performance to Rent

Has anyone heard about "Rent a Racer"?

Exerpt from Shelby Autos-

Forty years ago, Carroll Shelby and The Hertz Corporation came up with an ingenious plan to help get a batch of high-performance, special-edition Shelby Mustangs into the hands of rental customers who also happened to be car enthusiasts. Ford supplied the new Mustangs with V-8 engines and mostly automatic transmissions, Shelby added extra performance and style, and Hertz gave the public access to the kind of unique driving experience that one would normally only find on a racetrack. Today, the story of the Shelby/Hertz “Rent-A-Racer” is legendary and surviving Shelby GT350H Mustangs are among the most sought-after collector cars in the world. To connect the magical past of the original Shelby GT350H with the modern capabilities of the new Ford Mustang, Shelby, Ford and Hertz have again teamed up, and – together with the Ford Racing Performance Group – have given the 2006 Ford Shelby GT-H a very classic, muscular look as well as some true performance credentials.

Well, they are doing it again and Frank, charlies friend, has one for the weekend. Frank was nice enough to stop by and give us a ride. Adam declined the ride and chose only to have his picture taken with the car.

I think the most impressive thing about the car is the way it sounds. Its also interesting seeing all the add ons under the hood. I think Frank is driving it down to the keys this weekend. Hope he has fun and makes it back alive.

here are some more details on the car from the Shelby website-

Ford Racing Performance Group is supplying its popular Power Pack (FR1) to add a genuine 25-horsepower Ford performance kick to the 300-horse Mustang GT 4.6L V-8/Five-speed automatic transmission powertrain and an increase of 10 lb.-ft. of torque. The package includes Ford Racing’s 90mm Cold Air kit, the Muffler Kit, a new X-pipe similar to the one used on the new Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang, a performance calibration and a cat-back performance exhaust for that throaty sound that will make this car unmistakably a Shelby Mustang GT-H. To put that extra horsepower to the ground, the Ford Shelby GT-H also comes with the Ford Racing Handling Pack (FR3) installed, including special-tuned dampers inspired from the FR500C, lowering springs, sway bars and a strut tower brace – plus a Ford Racing 3.55:1 ratio rear axle assembly for extra off-the-line acceleration.

Doinks 2006 Interoffice Design Parade

Charlie Calderin named Honorary Band Marshal in Doinks 2006 Interoffice Design Parade

In an impromptu display of general stupidity, the Doink Design team in Coral Gables held their first Interoffice Design Parade held in honor of the drinks they had at lunch earlier that day. Led by Honorary Band Marshall Charlie Calderin, the four piece band marched through the mid-day office clutter in festive fashion to the absolute enjoyment of almost all involved. Using only the instruments thay had at hand, the quadruplet belted out classic favorites with the help of only a recorder, a harmonica, one Air Trombone and Band Marshall Charlie’s decidedly experimental, yet surprisingly effective Vocal Percussions.

“A complete success.” gushed Charlie Calderin. "Hands down one of the most fullfilling experinces I’ve been associated with since starting Doink over eleven years ago. It just feels good to give a little something back to the community.”

“When I saw all my bandmates, marching around their desks and chairs,” said Michelle Calderin, “I realized that as a creative group, we’re like, SUPER creative. I mean, C’mon – Air Trombone? Crazy right? That was John’s idea. He’s so crazy. We’re all crazy.”

But as overwhelmingly positive as the parade was, there were still those that left with a less positive take on things. “I thought it was a bit silly actually.” Commented Adam Fullerton, reluctant player of the afore mentioned Air Trombone. “One pitcher of beer between four people just does not justify a display like this. I mean – sneak a few swigs from mommy and daddy’s liquor stash when you’re 13 or 14 – sure. Have all the fake parades you want. But thirty-somethings sipping on a mid-day beer? C’mon.”

Although there are no immeadiate plans for another Design Parade, don’t be surprised if one day, during a late lunch, you see the Doink Quadruplet setting the stage for an encore performance. Just look for a half empty pitcher, a twinkle in their eyes, and a song in their hearts. The NEXT parade just might be right around the corner.

Clients Integral Ingredient to Success

By Rod Crotchman

Over the years there have been many different outlooks on what makes a business successful. In the design business, an overwhelming majority of design firms adhere to the theory of “obtaining and retaining clients”. Doink Inc. is one of those firms.

With a crack team of number crunchers and economic theorists, Doink Inc. has deemed their various clients a “definite necessity”. “We’ve been aware of this for a little over a year now.” reports Charlie Calderin, founding partner. “From an economic standpoint, our clients account for approximately 100% of our overall income. Records indicate that prior to our having clients, there was a noticeable absence of cash flow. If it weren’t for them [clients] I honestly believe we wouldn’t have anyone giving us money.”

Letter from President Charlie

By Adam Fullerton

First and foremost, as acting president of Doink Inc, I would like to thank my coworkers John McBride, Adam Fullerton and Michelle Berio Calderin for their diligent work. They have proven to be quite the little workers with a knack for making the office appear busy with needless clutter and overall body count. Kudos to you coworkers.

With that out of the way, I’d like to address myself. I’m fantastic. I’m witty, intelligent, a little more attractive than most and the cohesive glue that holds Doink together.

With the economy in it's current state I’d like to say I’m a fancy dresser. My shoes are up to date and I have more friends than I know what to do with. Thanks for all my hard work and keep it up.

I’d also like to thank our clients.

Charlie Calderin
President & Founding Partner, Doink Inc.

Doink Sightings

Every so often we come across a magazine or website and are surprized to see charlies toy designs. They have popped up in some pretty weird publications. We also get sightings of the big mouth bear on T-shirts.
We put our lawyers on it.

The Doink Toys

Doink Designed vinyl toys by Charlie Calderin. On the left, the Doink Big Mouth Bear circa 2002. On the right The Doink Fiesta Bunny circa 2006. The designs are on Toy2r shapes. Go out and buy a bunch. They are hard to find though.

The Man

The all seeing, all knowing, cigar chewing, looking for a rich divorcee, genius. Ira.

Employee of the Month

This months employee of the year is Adam Fullerton. His hard work and our alphabetical selection process have combined to make this honor happen.

“We really couldn’t be more fortunate.” Says Michelle Berio Calderin, Doink's Office Manager. “This is the first month that the DOINK Employee of the Year Program has been implemented. Alphabetically speaking, Adam was the hands down winner.
I mean, his name could just as easily have been Xavier or Yanni.”

“In my book” adds Charlie Calderin, founding partner and recipient of next months Employee of the Year award, “that’s a bonafide landslide.”

“BONE–A–FIDE!” Says John McBride.

Adam will receive a brand new, “I’m Number One” coffee mug and his picture will placed on the “Wall of Honor” shaking hands with the rest of the Doink Inc. design family. Way to go chief.
